Wallace Woon-Fong Leung

Chair Professor of Innovative Products and Technologies, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Wallace Leung received his BS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University (1977), and MS (1978) and ScD (1981) in Mechanical Engineering both from MIT. Since 2005, he is Chair Professor of Innovative Products and Technologies in Mechanical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has developed various novel nanofiber technologies for photovoltaics and air/water purification. A start-up company, Avalon Nanofiber Ltd. Taipei, was initiated in 2015. In 2017, Avalon started to produce nanofiber facemask for the public based on two of Dr. Leung’s IPs. To-date, over 2 million nanofiber masks have been sold. Between 2005 and 2011, Dr. Leung was the Founder and Director of the new Research Institute of Innovative Products and Technologies for PolyU developing R&D health technologies, including Decision Support Systems for cancer patients, blind navigation, smart osteoarthritis treatment, and interactive robotic training for stroke patients, together with faculties from the 26 departments in PolyU. Previously, Prof. Leung has worked in the United States for 25 years for Gulf R&D, Schlumberger, and Baker Hughes-Bird, respectively, for which he has developed various separation technologies. He has also found his own company Advantech developing centrifugal separation for biopharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Leung has published 32 SCI papers on nanofibers alone and many papers on other topics, including rotating microfluidics and LBM. He is author of two texts and holds 52 United States patents, including eight patents on use of nanofibers for energy and environmental applications. He has delivered plenaries, keynotes and invited talks globally. Prof. Leung is transdisciplinary with expertise in mechanical, chemical, material science, environmental, mineral processing, biotechnology and aerospace engineering. He a fellow of ASME, AICHE, AFS, HKIE and the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. He is Chairman of International Delegation on Filtration with 13 member countries and Chairman of the 13th World Filtration Congress, San Diego, CA, April 2020, an event held every 4 years rotating among different countries around the globe.
